PeopleSoft, J.D. Edwards and Oracle

The history of PeopleSoft, Inc. is interesting and rife with mergers and hostile takeovers. While the PeopleSoft product suite is began as a client-server architecture, it long ago moved to a web-based design and can be run on a standard web browser. All of the architecture of the PeopleSoft application is built with the proprietary PeopleTools technology. This ensures that developers can create customized modules for specific business needs related to human resources, supply chain, financial reporting, CRM, HRMS, etc. Developers can web-based applications in PeopleCode and the overall structure is not tied to a specific type of database. As such, it can be easily integrated with SQL Server, MySQL, Informix, Sybase, DB2, Unix, Oracle Rdb and HP AllBase/SQL.

PeopleSoft, Inc. underwent a friendly merger with ERP provider J.D. Edwards, a competitor with a generally different target client, namely mid-sized companies for which PeopleSoft applications were too expensive. Thereafter, Oracle made a hostile bid for PeopleSoft, eventually gaining control of the company and continuing to support both PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards application customers to avoid customer complaints and losing business to other ERP providers.
